How to Get Amazon Kindle 3 and Buy Kindle Books in Singapore (Updates: Kindle Touch and Kindle Fire Released! Scroll to Bottom)

For some reason, there are many products that are not available for delivery to Singapore from major retailers like Amazon in the USA. Some of these products include the hugely popular Amazon Kindle 3, and many others. Fortunately due to the popularity of these products, many people have figured ways to go around it. By the way, here is my review on Amazon Kindle 3, in case you are interested.

This post details the exact step by step i took to get Amazon Kindle 3 in Singapore, and to buy kindle books without any problem.

Step 1: Register for a Vpost/Borderlinx/ComGateway Account

For all my USA purchases, I have only used Vpost. So far they have delivered, although i must add that their delivery times can be a little erratic, especially during the holiday seasons.

I have not used Borderlinx, or ComGateway, although i know of people using them without any issues as well. For me, i am sticking to Vpost, since they have delivered my products without any problems.

Bascially Vpost, Borderlinx, and ComGateway are just intermediaries that have USA address for you to ship the items you want to, and then from that USA address, they will deliver it to your address in Singapore.

To sign up for Vpost, go here

To sign up for Borderlinx, go here

To sign up for ComGateway, go here

Registering at Vpost/Borderlinx/Comgateway will give you a US Postal Address for you to send your products to. (obviously this step is not just limited to buying Kindle or Amazon products, it can be used to buy other stuff from other USA retailers)

Once you get your USA postal address, go to step 2.

Step 2: Go to Amazon.com, and add the product to your shopping cart.

For a shortcut to Amazon Kindle 3 (wifi version), click here.  Seriously in Singapore, you really only need a wifi model. This is because if you have a smartphone – either an Iphone or an Andriod phone (which you probably do), you can use your smartphone as a wifi hub for your kindle.

After adding the kindle, you might also want to add one of the beautiful Amazon Kindle cases for your Kindle. Check them out here.

After you add the product(s) to your shopping cart, proceed to checkout. You will be asked to login if you have not already done so. If you do not have an Amazon account, you can create one.

Step 3: Add the USA postal address from Vpost/Borderlinx/ComGateway to your Amazon account and select it as the shipping address.

You might already have a Singapore shipping address on Amazon. If you want to get your hands on Amazon Kindle 3 or other products that retailers in USA only deliver within USA, then you got to get Amazon to deliver to your USA postal address given by Vpost/Borderlinx/ComGateway.

Step 4: Choose the cheapest shipping option.

Most of the time, Amazon offers a free shipping option for products above a certain price.

Step 5: Once you have verified your details, click on “Place Your Order”

Once we have placed our order, we are ready for our next phase – communicating with our 3rd party guys about the purchase and making payments for shipping charges.

Step 6: Email to a designated email from your 3rd Party about the order number.

Basically i forward the entire email invoice from Amazon to my 3rd party forwarding service, in my case Vpost.

For Vpost, the email to forward your invoice to is invusa@vpost.com.sg. You should receive an automated email reply from them acknowledging your email.

Step 7: Wait for your shipment to arrive at your 3rd party forwarder’s USA postal address and make payments

You can track the progress of your shipment on Amazon, using the instructions in their email.

Once your parcel has reached your forwarder, you will receive an email asking you to make payments.

For Vpost users, you can estimate your shipping cost using this table. As an estimate, my Amazon Kindle 3 cost $18, but after using the promo code, i only paid $9. For my Fujitsu Scansnap 1300, my shipping cost using Vpost to Singapore was $56.62, after 10% discount using promo codes, i paid $50.96

NOTE: that if the total cost of the product and the shipping/insurance exceeds $400 SGD, you are likely to pay GST on the product. This of cos depends on the exchange rates, which at the moment, is favorable to Singapore.

If you are using Vpost, you will be able to see a link to the promo codes when you are making payments.

Step 8: After you make payments, you just have to wait for your shipment to arrive!

At the point, there is nothing else to be done already, you just have to wait for your shipment to arrive. You can occasionally call 1605, and press 4 to go to Vpost call centre to find out the status of your shipment. Do get your Vpost ID or your NRIC/Passport ready for verification.

When you receive your Kindle, do give me a shoutout in the comments section!

Once you received your Amazon Kindle 3, the next step would be to purchase kindle books from Amazon.

The remaining steps are to ensure that seamless purchase and delivery of Amazon Kindle books without Amazon locking your account and prompting you for proof of residency in USA.

Amazon Kindle 3 and other products are not meant to be delivered out of USA, at least not yet. Hence it is programmed in Amazon website that if you purchase kindle ebooks directly using your Singapore credit card or if you purchase kindle ebooks “outside of singapore”, it will alert Amazon of this abnormality.

Fret not, as many others have figure out how to get around this. Here’s how to get your hands on Amazon Kindle books without alerting Amazon to prompt you for proof of residency in the USA

Step 1: Add a proper USA address

You will first need a real USA postal address. If you have added the address given to you by Vpost/Borderlinx/ComGateway, it should be fine.

Step 2a: Go to Manage your kindle, and Change the Location to USA

Go to Digital Content >> Manage Your Kindle link in your amazon account. Navigate to the header “Country Settings” on the left hand sidebar and change the address to USA. See screenshot.

Note – If you are facing some problems with this, go download a VPN Service that allows you to change your IP address such that it appears that you are visiting the Amazon website from USA. An example of such a VPN are Hotspot Shield. You can also go to HideMyAss.com, and enter the Amazon website into the address bar for the same effect.

After using the VPN, see if there is any issue with changing the address to USA.

Step 2b: Change the One Click Setting default address to your Vpost address (Oregon)

This step was added after i updated the post – see Update 20th July 2011 at the end of this post.

Certain US States charge taxes on purchases, including kindle ebooks. This will apply to you even if you buy them in Singapore because Amazon assume you are buying them from USA. Hence its important that all your settings are set to a US State that does not charge taxes. Examples of States that charge sales tax include North Carolina, Illinois, California, and Arizona. States that does not charge sales tax include Oregon which incidentally is our Vpost State (this is where we want to set our US address). For more info on taxes, see here.

So this is what we need to do. After you set your country to USA above, all you need to do now is also to update your default address to the Vpost address in One Click Settings.

Go to your amazon account, Settings >> One Click Settings.

Go to your Vpost Address, and click on the “Edit” for the One Click Settings For This Address

Then finally check the 1-Click dropdown: Include Address in your 1-Click dropdown box, as shown below.

Step 3: Purchase of Amazon Gift Cards

To purchase Amazon Kindle books without alerting Amazon, the way to go is to purchase Gift Cards using your Singapore Credit Card and apply the Gift Card to your Account.

It works because Gift Cards are available to anyone from any country, and you always can use gift cards to offset any purchase, in our case, Amazon Ebooks, without leaving any traces.

To purchase Amazon Gift Cards, go here. Follow the instructions and apply Gift Card to your account.

Step 4: Purchase Kindle Books

Once you have done step 1-3, and there are available funds in your gift card you can just browse to your favorite Kindle book and buy. There is no need to use VPN or anything.

I would always go to my Gift Card Balance page here and make sure there is sufficient funds before i purchase any kindle books.

Update 6th July 2011: There are readers who have reported that despite using gift card balance to purchase kindle ebooks, they still get prompted to update their country. I have since verified that this is indeed true with my latest purchase of kindle ebooks. In order to circumvent this, all you need to do is just use a VPN service, like Hotshield, then once you are connected, you can continue to purchase. Thats all i did.

Now just go and buy the kindle books you wanted using the 1-click purchase.

Step 5: Turn on the Wireless feature on your kindle

Once you turn on the wireless feature on your kindle, your book will automatically be downloaded to your kindle, provided your kindle has already setup the necessary settings for the wireless connection.

———————————————————————————

I have used the above steps to get my Amazon Kindle 3 and bought all the Kindle books i wanted without any problem. If you experience anything or if you have question, feel free to post in the comments below. Will do my best to reply. If possible, do research it on your own, as i might not be available to answer your questions.

Update 20th July 2011:  After buying countless kindle books, i realized i have paying unnecessary taxes on the purchases. It worked out to be almost $20, just paying for taxes!! This happened because i had stated a North Carolina address in USA, which is a State that is subjected to taxes. This only happened because i have been using One-Click to buy. And my default One Click address was set to North Carolina. I have since changed my One Click default address to Oregon, my Vpost Address (Oregon is a state not subjected by taxes, I guess this is why Vpost setup their forwarding address there). I have bought several books since, and there have been no taxes charged to my purchases. With the ever changing taxation landscape in USA, i don’t know if this will continue indefinitely, but i will surely update any changes.

Update: 28th July 2011:

Amazon’s customer service is AMAZING! I realize the back casing for my kindle does not snap together properly, leaving a small gap. It does not affect my reading at all, but who doesn’t want their items to look nice right? Good thing I realize my kindle is still under the one year warranty. Coincidentally i am planning to travel to USA next week, so i decided to make an overseas call to check if they can take a look at the device and determine if i am eligible for an exchange. Bear in mind this is the first time i called Amazon’s customer service. In Singapore, you know what happens if you go to a service centre, the customer service guys will usually look at the device – a computer, handphone, gadget, etc -  and determine if it was a factory defect or was it cause by human negligence. If it was caused by human negligence, you are not allowed to exchange. When i called Amazon, i was worried that when i send the kindle back to Amazon, i might get my original kindle back as they might determined it to be a defect cause by human negligence. TO MY SURPRISE, the customer service rep told me they will send me a new Kindle, and let me see if the new Kindle have any defects, and if its to my satisfaction. If i have no problems with the new Kindle, they only require me to send back the old one, postage paid. This solves a couple of problems all at once 1) postage for sending the item back to Amazon (most companies require you to pay for the postage back to them) 2) item not being repaired at all because of human negligence. 3) When the new kindle arrive, i can just send the old kindle in the same box the new kindle came in, and use the pre paid postage label, and just send it back to Amazon. Goodness me, i have not encountered such fantastic service ever! I am an Amazon customer for life now. (I must add that if you do not stay in the USA or do not travel to the USA, it will be a challenge to send a defective kindle back to Amazon. Fortunately i would say most of the Kindles are produced defect free, BUT if you fall under this category, then either check this link or call Amazon’s international hotline – 1-206-266-2992)

Update: 21st Aug, 2011:

Vpost has announced on its website that its USA address for our shipments to be delivered to has changed. The old address will remained till 31st August. Read the notice at their website here. Pls contact them if you have send to the old address. If you have been following the instructions from the vpost website, you should be fine.

Update: 30th Sep, 2011:

Amazon has just announced “FOUR” new products adding to the Kindle Family. Actually its just ONE new product, i.e. the Kindle Fire, which is a Andriod Tablet that runs on a customized Amazon OS. From the reviews i read, its does the basic functions really well, and for those who wants an inexpensive Tablet to watch movies, read books, listen to music on, this is the device to get. Unlike many of the Andriod tablets which have received fairly poor reviews, this tablet developed by Amazon, a company known for fanatical service and fantastic products, proves to be the real competition to the Ipad.  It costs just $199usd and is vailable only for pre-order. Do check it out the all new Amazon tablet here.

As for the other 3 new products, there are actually just 3 variations of the latest version of the kindle. The previous kindle was known as “Kindle 3″ , while the new kindle is just “Kindle”. The 3 variations are

1) Kindle (without touch screen, and without keypad. Price is $79 w advertisements, and $109 without. Already available for ordering today. Do check it out here)

2) Kindle Touch (touch screen kindle, w/o keypad. Price is $99 w advertisements, and $139 without. Available only for pre-order. Do check it out here)

3) Kindle Touch 3g (same as Kindle Touch but with 3G. Price is $149 w advertisements, and $189 without. As always, my advice is NOT to get 3G version, since wifi ones are more than sufficient. Besides a Kindle Fire cost $199, and a Kindle Touch 3G cost $189, its a no brainer right?). If you insist, you can check it out here

4) Kindle (International Shipping)

I found out that Amazon has a Kindle specially for international shipping and its cost the same (i.e $109). The only thing is if you buy using this, then you have to use Amazon shipping for international, which might not always be the cheapest. I do advise due diligence in checking before making your purchases.

Hi, thanks for your detailed information, I’m planning to buy a kindle 3 through this way, may I know how much did you cost in total for purchasing a kindle? thanks

    • http://systematic-wealth.com Henry

      Hi Sujianni,
You mean the total cost? I paid $139 usd for the Wifi version (which was around $190.40 sgd at the time i bought it) , and then $9 sgd for vpost shipping (it would be $18 but because i use the coupon for new vpost users, i got 50% off). So in total around $200.

    Hi…

I attempted to download a free e-book via Kindle store last night, with my VPN switched on. However, I received an e-mail asking for proof of residency. Does that mean my account has been locked and I won’t be able to make any e-books purchase in the future?

I’ve downloaded e-books using the gift cards with no problem.

    Appreciate the help!

    Thanks!

      Hi Mohammad,
Have u input the US address in your amazon account already? How did u buy the kindle? Through Vpost?

From what i know, your account is not locked until it is locked. Though u still have to resolve the proof residency issue.

Hi, Henry. Yes, my amazon account is solely for my kindle, with a US address, and I used Vpost for the purchase.

Hi, thanks for sharing detailed steps in getting a Kindle and buying e-books from the Kindle store. I’ve gotten my Kindle however I was unable to retrieve the e-books which I have dragged into the Kindle thus not being able to read any of them. Those e-books are from my friend who shared them with me, with the file extension – .mobi, .azw and .pdf which I believed there is no need to do any (further) conversion on those e-book files. Strange.

    Pls help.

    Thanks!

    • http://www.facebook.com/henrytan1981 Henry Tan

      Hi,
did u drag them to the documents folder? There are four folders in kindle. For ebooks to work, they must go to the documents for .pdf, .azw format. For audio books, drag them to audio.

Let me know how it goes ya?
      Henry

  • kay

Hi, thanks for sharing! I don’t know if this will be of use to you…but I’ve been buying my ebooks straight from the publishers. They come in pdf format and I just get amazon to convert them to .azw for free or I use a converter to change them to .mobi. It works well too. Just thought you might be interested. =)

      Hi Kay,
Thanks for sharing. Can you let us know how do you get the ebooks from publishers? Do you mean that you contact the authors directly or you purchased the pdf versions?

I am guessing the converter you using is Calibre?

      Henry

      • Kay

Yep..i just purchase the pdf versions off the publisher’s website, or whichever e-bookstore gives me the best price. =)

And yes, I use calibre. =) You’re familiar with that software too?

        • http://www.facebook.com/henrytan1981 Henry Tan

          Hi Kay,
Care to share which ebookstore website you went?

Calibre is wonderful… can convert almost all formats. I notice that it doesn’t convert all pdf very well though, sometimes the heading and images can go off…some very off.

          Henry

          • kay

hmm..i don’t have any particular ebookstores that I keep going back too. Mostly I just type the Titleofthebook pdf/ title of the book ebook into the google and pick the cheapest out of the options. I also came across some forums where they kinda “share” their ebooks with each other for free, but I’m not sure if there are legal repercussions to that. haha.

Yep, having the calibre does open up a lot more options since we won’t be restricted to the titles offered by kindle, or worry about the account getting suspended. =)

Great to hear that it has arrived. Seems like its pretty fast huh, about 2 weeks from date of purchase. Enjoy your kindle!

  • Saykin

There is a recent update to the purchase process. After I’ve clicked the 1-Click button, I was channeled to a page where it informs me that I have to update my address as I’m from another country. The gift card value was not deducted.

    • http://systematic-wealth.com Henry

      Hi Saykin,
Do you already have value in your gift card balance?

I am pretty sure if your gift card have balance, and you just use the balance to buy kindle books with 1-click, there will be no problems. The problem is usually when you click on 1-click with insufficient gift card balance.

      Let me know ya?
      Henry

      • Saykin

Hi Henry, thank you for your reply.
I have sufficient funds in my gift card balance.
I have checked it and it shows the amount in red.

        • http://systematic-wealth.com Henry

          Hi Saykin,
I think i know what you need to do. Did u see step 2 in the blog post above?

“Step 2: Go to Manage your kindle, and Change the Location to USA”

See if u can change that to USA, and then give it a shot again.

          Let us know ya?
          Henry

          • Saykin

            Hi Henry,

Changing the location was already in place.

What I believe is that Amazon is able to detect the
IP address of our site when we log in and thus was
able to discover we are buying from another country.

They are catching up with us…

          • http://systematic-wealth.com Henry

Test this out. Use hidemyass.com, which is a proxy service. Basically when u use this website to surf the website, you can considered to be in USA. So go to hidemyass.com, and enter amazon.com in the url section, and then use it to change your address to USA.

You might want to clear your cookies before you do this.

    Hi,

    Need some hhhelp!

I am planning to get a kindle for my wife’s birthday (which is in like 3 weeks time!).

    1. I find the amazon bookstore for kindle is quite limited. Is it so? or I have to get the VPN access to see more books? How many books are we talking about on the amazon bookstore for kindle btw?

    2. How fast can I get the kindle to Singapore via vpost?

    3. Do you think amazon might find out about that loophole in buying e-books from sg and leave us hanging out to dry?

    Thanks in advance,
Great blog btw! …just stumble across via google…now gonna bookmark you!
    cheers,

    Running-out-of-idea bloke!
    Greg.

    • http://www.facebook.com/henrytan1981 Henry Tan

      Hey Greg,
      Good idea for a present!

The amazon bookstore is pretty good. I just checked there are like more than 991,000 books in there! Also a large number of new books are available in kindle format. There is no need for VPN access to see more books.

You can also read pdf versions of books in your kindle. However if you want to get the pdf version of books, you have to find them…

How fast can u receive your kindle? I receive mine about 3 weeks (that includes a short while for waiting as mine was a pre-order). If u want it faster, you might want to pay for shipping to the vpost forwarding address.

From vpost to you, its usually 7 days after payment is made.

I think there is a fairly large number of Singaporeans (or for that matter, international buyers of kindle), they probably wouldn’t want to disrupt a valuable source of revenue. :)

      Good luck dude,
      Henry

      • Greg

Thanks Henry! Appreciate the fast reply. I may need your help again to find good deals for books in the future.
I’m gonna place the order soon.

Btw, another question…how much on average are you guys paying for e-books for kindle? $5? $10?
..We usually go for book sales and can pick up books in that price range…

Another question again, can you “share” your books with other people (as in friends)? hehe

        So many questions… :)

        thanks again!
        Greg

        • http://www.facebook.com/henrytan1981 Henry Tan

          Hey Greg,
          No problems :)

Kindle books are usually about $9.99 usd, sometimes less sometimes more.

Previously, Amazon has this feature where you can share books with friends, but i think they have retired that feature.

As for book sharing, lets just leave it as “its possible” :)

Hi there, i was wondering if i could read e books on my kindle?
I usually download my ebooks online, so i can simply transfer all of em to kindle and read from it?

    Thanks.

    • http://www.facebook.com/henrytan1981 Henry Tan

Yes you can! Thats what i do now actually. Just transfer the pdf files you have on your comp, to the documents folder in the kindle, and it will show up on your kindle. Do note that some pdf files (especially the larger file size ones) load pretty slowly, and page turn speed are pretty slow when u read them on kindle.

Hi are there any developments with regards to getting Kindle 3 and ebooks in SG “officially”? I tried to order via the Amazon site today (tho I didnt finish the final stage of purchase) and didnt find the obstacles I had experienced previously where they say Kindle and content are not available for SG.

I also read that HideMyAss and HotSpotShield seems to have seem safety issues. Any recommendations on this? Am getting a Kindle from someone else as a gift soon and just need to worry abt getting the content…

    • http://www.facebook.com/henrytan1981 Henry Tan

      Hey,
As to whether there are any new developments w.r.t to kindle 3 in sg, i really dunno. Perhaps you might want to give it a shot ordering direct to sg?Do let us know how if you do so yeah?

I have been using hidemyass.com and hotspotshield for a very long time with no issues.

I think there is a fairly large no of people in singapore who have kindle (including myself), and i have no problem getting the ebooks. So should be no prob.

        Hi Henry,

It turns out a family member has an unused Kindle lying around that he’s willing to let me have so I don’t need to buy it through Amazon. I also got a friend living in US who got me gift cards from Amazon with her US address and credit card.

So right now I am just wondering how to apply the gift card for me to buy the thing. It seems that I need to register the kindle with Amazon in order to buy the books? (Sorry I am completely new to this) Will this create any problems?

When I apply the gift card to myself, do I still need to use the VPN?

        Thanks a lot!!

        • http://www.facebook.com/henrytan1981 Henry Tan

          Hey,
Yap you need to register the kindle on your amazon account >>  digital management >> manage your kindle >> register your kindle There should be a serial no for you to enter into the boxes.

Once u do that, you can apply the gift card like normal, and when u buy the ebooks, turn on your wireless on your kindle, and it will show up on your kindle.

let us know how it goes ya?

          Henry

          • BookCat

Hi Henry, thanks a lot for your help…I tried to buy a book with gift cards and managed to download it. However, I later received an email asking abt the proof of residency. Does that mean I should not use that account anymore? I had inputed a US address under “Manage My Kindle”. Should I get VPN and still use that account or do I need a new account? I still have gift card balance in that account :(

          • http://www.facebook.com/henrytan1981 Henry Tan

            Hey,
You are almost set. Someone else had the same issue. Now u just need to go edit your address like my instructions above. Best to use a VPN like hotspotshield before you go edit your address.

After u do that, you should not get any prompt for proof of residency…

let me know how it goes ya?
            Henry

          • BookCat

Hi, I did actually use a US address all along. So does that mean I should just get VPN and continue using the same account and same US address? Thank u so much!

          • http://www.facebook.com/henrytan1981 Henry Tan

Ah….Then either way you should have no problem cos
            1) You can probably show proof of your residency, since u actually have a address over there, right?
            2) U can use a vpn n continue using the same USA address or the USA vpost address

either way should be fine, but if you use 2, then u need to use hot spot shield

            Henry

          • BookCat

Ha actually I don’t cos I used the Vpost US address.  I guess it’s option 2 then. I’ll try again and see if it works. Thanks for the help!

          • BookCat

Oh by the way, I have not registered my Kindle yet. Just used a PC version and registered that to try out the buying process first.

  • kindlen00b

Hey. So how do you access Kindle content in Singapore ? No restrictions on download from Amazon ? Also, I’m probably getting a friend from the US to bring it for me. There shouldn’t be any issues if its bought in US and used in Singapore right ?

    • http://www.facebook.com/henrytan1981 Henry Tan

You can browse and shop for kindle content from anywhere. The problems only come when u decide to purchase them. If you use your singapore credit card to purchase, then they will ask you for proof of residence. If you use your sg credit card to buy gift card then use the gift card to buy kindle, you can do this anywhere in the world.

Safest route is to use your sg credit card and buy gift card USING a VPN. Once you buy kindle content, and your wifi on your kindle is turn on and connected, it will automatically be downloaded to your kindle.

  • http://shanx.com Shanx

I was hoping for a smart solution. But vpost is just not one. It takes ages to get items, if we are lucky. They have no mechanism of informing me proactively about arrived items so I can arrange pickup. When and if the items do arrive. Have tried using them for my Amazon electronics purchases in the past, and basically decided never to use the drivel again.

It’s time Singapore was formally added to the list of supported countries. What’s keeping Amazon? We’re among the most broadband-savvy countries on the planet. Is it government censorship?

    • http://www.facebook.com/henrytan1981 Henry Tan

Hey Shanx, yeah i know it sucks man. We all hope it can improve but its not, so we got to find other ways to go around the issue. There are alternatives to vpost like i mention above like Borderlinc or ComGateway, which i have not used before but heard good reviews. You might want to consider that.

      take care,
      Henry

      • http://shanx.com Shanx

Thanks. All this might work for the Kindle device if one has the energy to expend. I’m more interested in Kindle app for the iPad. It’s more painful to circumvent that, because my Apple ID is registered in Singapore (and I need it to be, as I have many Apple devices). And if the Apple ID is registered in Singapore, the Kindle app doesn’t work, VPN or no VPN.

What’s the issue here. Is it Singapore laws?

        • http://www.facebook.com/henrytan1981 Henry Tan

          Hey,
For the ipad app for kindle, that i am not sure man. Certainly hope u can find a solution, as i am sure many others are feeling ur pain.

  • Stan

Hey, I just ordered a kindle 3 via Vpost after reading your article, thanks so much for the great instructions. Cause I’m rather new to this, I’d like to know if there would be any problems with downloading free books via wi-fi? Would I have to use hotspot shield and stuff for it? Thanks

    • http://www.facebook.com/henrytan1981 Henry Tan

      Hey Stan,
there is no problem w using wifi to download free books. I do it all the time. The only time when issues will arise is when u buy kindle books on amazon. For buying kindle books, as long as you use gift card to buy, then there will be no problem.

      hope that helps man,
      Henry

      • Stan

Hey Henry, I recently tried to download a free ebook from  amazon. However, I was redirected to a page saying that I am trying to download it in a country different from my account. Do I have to use a software to hide my vpn? I tried hotspot shield but the program itself doesn’t appear to be working.

        • http://www.facebook.com/henrytan1981 Henry Tan

          Hey,
Have u changed ur country in Manage your kindle to USA? If yes, and it still show the message, then just use VPN. Do check it out and let us know ya?

      Hi Constance,

    Hi Henry,

Thanks for the useful information. I am just about to pull the trigger on a kindle but that ‘what if’ feeling of getting a dreaded address verification email from amazon is holding me back.

What really is one to do if that happens? Is there any way to actually verify it with just a vpost or comgateway address?

    Cheers,
    Chandhana

    • http://www.facebook.com/henrytan1981 Henry Tan

      Hey Chandhana,
Sorry for the late reply, did not see this comment at all.

I have actually encountered it a couple of times, there is no need to worry. You can treat it like the friendly reminder services, that ask if you forgot something. Thats really what it is. Amazon is worried you input the wrong address, so all you need to do is to input the “right” address thats all!

      thank it helps,
      Henry

  • Winnie

I have just gotten my Kindle3 from my friend who helped to bulk-purchase from Amazon>Vpost method. It’s the WIFI model. First step is for me to get to a WIFI spot to start registering the Kindle set ? I am at a total loss at using the recommended “Calibre” library software. Can you share with me some simple directions on how to get started please?

    • http://www.facebook.com/henrytan1981 Henry Tan

      Hey Winnie,
      No worries. Stay steady yeah?

First step for you is to find a place with internet connection, your house maybe?  :)

Then, follow the instructions above, and go to Amazon to register your kindle and edit your account settings. And you are good to go! Just buy gift cards and use them to buy kindle books, or download free ebooks and start reading.

The calibre software is ONLY necessary if you want to convert from other book formats to a kindle reading format. Kindle only read two formats, files ending with extensions “.azw” and “.mobi”. It also reads pdf files but some pdf files can be tough to read on kindle due to formatting.

Only reason why u need calibre in my opinino is that you got books in other formats like “.epub” or other formats. Then you just download calibre, drag your ebook which is in .epub into the software, then right click and select convert. And you are done. I think the calibre guys have a much more detailed instructions than what i have given, so just give it a shot, and let us know how it goes ya?

  • caroline

Hi, I’ve some doubts. Ebooks purchases will always be deducted from the gift card balance instead of getting charged to the credit card, am I right? This occurs even though you’re buying with one-click?

    • http://www.facebook.com/henrytan1981 Henry Tan

Hey Caroline, if you have gift card balance, it will always default to gift card balance first, regardless whether is it one click or normal checkout. This is according to my experience. However i do know that you can also change your one click settings to set it to either purchase from gift card or from credit card. You will only have that option if you have balance in your gift card, if there is no money in your gift card, there will not be such an option.

In summary, as long as you have enough balance in your gift card, there is no need to worry much.

May I ask if the wifi + 3G version works in Singapore? I am keen in getting one. Please advice! Thanks so much!!

    • http://www.facebook.com/henrytan1981 Henry Tan

      Hi per,
yes of cos it works! I know of people with 3g + wifi and wifi only, reading the kindle books happily…

  • Clara

Hey there! Was at Sim Lim Square just last week and saw a shop selling all of the Kindle Readers.. Having said that, would there be any difference as when ordered from Amazon itself?

    • http://www.facebook.com/henrytan1981 Henry Tan

      Hi clara,
besides price difference, i do not think there will be any difference at all… I have seen shops selling kindle before, and as of now, i don’t think (or i am not aware of) any shops that sell lower than Amazon (even after including shipping costs to sg). hope this helps!

  • Stynium

Henry, I got my Kindle today after following your instructions! This is just great – thanks for your guide! Much appreciated!

Note Vpost gives you offers from DBS cards, UOB for 50% off for your first purchase! Very useful!
But Vpost is very slow – it took two weeks for my kindle to reach me. Took 5 days for the package  to be shipped from Vpost Oregon to Singapore.

Is Borderlinx or another shipper BETTER than Vpost?

Just to let you know that for changing the country, I just went to the Manage your Kindle and used the US address and it worked.
Some users may find that Hidemyass blocks them, like me, from getting to Manage your Kindle because somehow cookies cannot be stored – could not get past Login page. To fix that try it without Hidemyass.

    • http://www.facebook.com/henrytan1981 Henry Tan

      Hey Stynium,
thanks for your comments and tips!

glad u are enjoying ur kindle as much as i am enjoying mine! :)

    • http://systematic-wealth.com Henry

      Hey,
U can just pay using ur Sg credit card. It doesn’t matter cos Amazon thinks u are sending to a USA address, which is the main issue here (mailing to a US address).

      Hope that helps!

Oops, sorry. I deleted my tweet. Hee.. I asked if you could help me get the Kindle from usa since you’re going there but anyway, I ordered from Amazon already.  It’s reaching Portland on 01Aug.  Wondering when it’ll arrive in Sg?
Thanks for your tips but I still don’t understand how the gift card works.
Btw, it says item could’ve free shipping but it takes 5-8 days so I just paid addtl $6.80 for 3-5 days. :)

        • http://www.facebook.com/henrytan1981 Henry Tan

          Hey Dee,
No prob. It usually takes about 14 days from the time of ordering to reach u in SG. Haha, guess u paid $6.8 for expediting it ya? Then it should reach Vpost much faster. Have u emailed vpost as per instructions above? Once u emailed them, u will get a confirmation from vpost once the kindle reaches them. So from there, u know its just a matter of time…

          Henry

          • dee

i registered with both vpost & comgateway but i thought the latter is more user-friendly for a person like me who’s LAZY to read instructions, so after i keyed in my invoice# & amount, there was like a notification that says they’ll email me once it has arrived. something like that.
i’ll ask you again later when i need to know more ok. thank you!  ps: my dad’s name is henry. gdnite.

    Hi
I think you know everything about kindle right now :) I want to buy Kindle with 3G using you method but I want to ask what will happen if I will but the one with special offers, it is cheaper but they say that it is working only in U.S. I dont understand what is working is it 3G itself or WiFi is also interrupted? And could you explain me how this free 3G works? Is it only to connect with Amazon store or you can browse other websites also?
    Thanks in advance for response.

    • http://systematic-wealth.com Henry

      Hey Alex,
I am not sure what is the exact difference between Kindle w offers and Kindle w/o special offers. I know its cheaper because they serve some kind of advertisements in the kindle. However i have heard that the advertisements only appear before and after the book is opened, so your reading experience while reading would not be affected much. Thats what i heard, and i haven’t actually verify it. I believe u might be able to find more pertinent information if you research online.

I am not sure if i understood ur question, but here’s what i gather from above. You want to know if you should buy a 3g/wifi or wifi only model? My recommendation in this blog post is actually to get just the wifi ones. Cos you can use kindle’s wifi setting to connect to your smartphone 3g data network (assuming u have a smartphone and have data plans). Whether is it 3g or wifi, it only serves to download books or to serve internet (not advisable due to poor browsing capabilities)

      hope i answered ur qn.

        Hey guys,

Perhaps you all can also try out this free vpn service from real-vpn.com
But FYI, they support PC version only, and they do have a limit on number of logins allowed. Anyway, it’s free (for now). Although the website says beta, but it’s totally workable and setup is super easy ;) (but do read the instructions carefully, cuz i missed out a step when replacing a folder, but eventually it’s fixed :P )

        Cheers!

He’s a typical bookworm, quite skeptical about non-traditional way of reading too :P Managed to convince him and he took a look at another ebook brand during the comex show and he decided to get a kindle as well..hahaa….
But I would prefer chinese books more, so I’ve been “diligently” looking at forums that help to fix chinese char issues on kindle..hehe..

    Hi Henry,

Just wonder… If I get my kindle from ebay, will there be any issues? Cuz the sellers mentioned that the warranty will still be from the manufacturer (which I assumed is amazon). I can still do the registration on amazon, just like the rest who bought their kindles from amazon?
Btw, have you tried Strong VPN or other supposedly “reputable” VPN providers?
Thanks in advance for answering my questions! :)

    • http://www.facebook.com/henrytan1981 Henry Tan

      Hi Joce,
I supposed it will be fine. Do check the reputation of the seller as with all ebay purchases. Joce, is the price on ebay cheaper than it is from Amazon? If not, i think its better to get from Amazon directly itself…unless the benefits outweigh that option.

i have not tested Strong Vpn. I have used hidemyass.com and hotspot shield and both are free and good to use.

      hope it helps,

      Henry

      • Joce_teo

        Hi Henry,

Thanks for replying so promptly :)

Well..I have read thru the reviews of the sellers and stuff (but who can be 100% sure, right? :) ) However, regarding the price, it’s somehow cheaper than amazon’s, for e.g, the non-ads version is sold for about US$120 (amazon is selling it at US$139).

Ok, that’s about S$20+ diff….but both provide free shipping within US. So not much diff in this sense. Then i can just make full use of the promo from comgateway or vpost, so the shipping cost will be lowered. But I will seriously consider the pros and cons before i get it off ebay :)

        Thanks again!

        • http://www.facebook.com/henrytan1981 Henry Tan

I am now planning to purchase kindle in Singapore but currently looking where to buy or is it a kindle or a nook..

Hey Nolan, yes you can read pdf files on kindle. I did mentioned in my post that reading large pdf files might not be a pleasant experience as page turning can be slow. So do beware of this. And of cos, reading pdf files on a Kindle DX (larger version of kindle) is better than reading on the kindle 3.

Hi Henry I am about to get my Kindle but one concern that really nags at me and I was hoping you may address it. After getting the gift cards and changing IP address, then purchasing the Kindle edition book, how does the ebook get to the Kindle wirelessly? Thanks!

    • http://systematic-wealth.com Henry

      Hi Ed,
To let Amazon send u the kindle books after payment, all you need to do is to
      1) Make sure your kindle already registered to your amazon account.
      2) Turn on the wireless signal on kindle, and setup wireless settings (enter password, etc)

thats it! Amazon will automatically send the file once wireless connection established. U can see the download progress under the menu bar.

      hope this helps!

hi,  seems like i cannot get kindle touch wifi delivered to singapore address. Is this because it can only be shipped to US address? Only US user can use Kindle touch?
Did you encounter any problem while using your Kindle thus far? Is there anything you can use or not use as we are non US user?

    • http://systematic-wealth.com Henry

      Hi,
amazon have some usa only products, which means they can only be delivered to usa address. In fact this blog post teaches how to use vpost usa address to get this kindle. As for your issue, I think if you already followed the instructions above and still can’t get it, then you might want to get the kindle for international which is at the bottom of the blog post.

Hi Henry, do I required to also order any charger or is that accessory included in the kindle package? What other accessories is there necessary to order?

          Hey,
nope you dun need a charger. Included in the packing is a adapter, which can be used on a 2 pin plug in Singapore. Also you can directly charge with the usb wire connecting to your computer.

Hi henry, I have ordered for one kindle and one cover and tried to check out just now. My question is how do I arrange my item? How do I put the 2 items together with only one shipment? For my kindle I am eligible for the free super saver shipping so it will be about 5-8days shipping while my cover, cheapest shipment I can choose is standard shipping which is about 3-5 days. I want them to be shipped together and both enjoy the super saver shipping. How?

          • http://www.facebook.com/henrytan1981 Henry Tan

            Hi,
I think in Amazon, when you are checking out, there is an option to ship items together. Have you seen the option when u are checking out?

            Henry

          • Your_ez_way

            Hi Henry,
I have figured it out why I couldn’t combine the shipment that is because my kindle is from amazon but the cover i ordered is from 3rd party hence to be shipped in one shipment is not possible.
            thanks!

Hello! I’m interested in getting a kindle 4 but leaning towards CGW because the first 0,5kg is cheaper. I read somewhere that the package for kindle 4 is quite small so the volumetric weight should be quite small also? and how many kindle do you think is the optimum to escape GST + minimum shipping cost.. im thinking 2-3 but i might be wrong! thanks for ur time henry!

    • http://www.facebook.com/henrytan1981 Henry Tan

      Hey Taeyeon,
      1) Unfortunately you would need to check both sites for the best shipping options. Personally i just use vpost, and haven’t experiment with others, but i have learned great things about borderlinc. Not heard about ComGateway though, but thats just me.

2 To escape gst, i think ur total order including shipping (after conversion to sgd) must not exceed $400. To be sure, you might want to check customs website.

      hope it helps!

            hey kirk,
see if its same if you use a different browser like IE or Google Chrome or Firefox. Do make sure you cleared your cookies first.

            hope it helps,

No dice. Its still giving me the same prompt even when I use another browser on another computer from another network using Hotspot Shield. Did Amazon wise up to HotSpot Shield or something? Is anyone experiencing this too? *frustration*

    Hi Henry,

my kindle is purchased under the special offers and on shipping now, do you have any idea how to redeem the free gift card credit?

    from amazon, it says

    Special Offers & Sponsored Screensavers
You’ll receive special offers and sponsored screensavers directly on your Kindle Keyboard. Examples of past special offers include:

    $10 for $20 Amazon.com Gift Card
Save up to $500 off Amazon’s already low prices on select HDTVs
$1 for a Kindle book, choose from thousands of books

but my current account with amazon is still 0, is it because i can only redeem the free credit from my kindle?

    thank you!

    Hi Henry,

how could we ship back the faulty kindle to amazon for a replacement? and does it reveal our non-US nationality?

    • http://systematic-wealth.com Henry

      Hi,
I dun think it matters where you send it from, because technically you can be based overseas for work. So i think u just have to contact Amazon about your faulty kindle, and indicate you are based overseas, and just make arrangements with them to send your kindle back and get a new one.

From what i experience, they are likely to send you a new one first, then within 30 days you got to send your old one back. That’s their customer service.

so amazon will send the replacement to vpost at Oregon and then ship back to singapore?
and i send back the faulty one back to amazon by using vpost as well?

        thank you!

        • http://systematic-wealth.com Henry

          Hi,
why don’t you contact them to check this out. Just tell them about you being based overseas, and see how.

    Hi,

Would Amazon be able to identify that the vpost address as “suspicious”, and request user for proof of residence? This is because I intend to use VPOST address as the US Address.

      Hey,
I have not have any problems with using my vpost address as the US address. Hope that helps!

Hi, thanks for this wonderful guide. I m trying to get my hands on a kindle fire. Do you know when does Amazon usually deduct payment from your card? Do they accept payment from local cards?

    • http://www.facebook.com/henrytan1981 Henry Tan

      Hi Joel,
Yes they accept payment from local credit cards. I am not sure when Amazon deduct from your card.

Hi Henry, thanks for the useful information, I’m wondering how long does it takes for Vpost to update my purchase, I noticed that my reader have already arrived at the US address but under my account, still no new packages. It have been more than 12 hrs and the item arrived around 9am at the location.

I’ve also sent an enquiry to them but still no reply. Thanks

      Hey,
It usually takes one week from Amazon to Vpost (Depending on what shipment you use, but one week is for free shipping).

Suggest checking after one week, then see if undeclared or unpaid invoice in your account, then proceed to make payments. Once done, it will take another 1 week or so to reach you.

      hope this helps,
      Henry

Hi I have the android kindle on my phone and I have successfully downloaded 3 books via the vpn n browser combo. My android kindle will show recommended books for me which is quite tempting to click I don’t have access to my PC. Is it advisable to order books on the kindle itself?

  • Monzaandre

I tried all the above steps and wanted to buy and cheap “test book” with a gift voucher before buying the actual reader. The system refuses to display e-books. I have a US address registered and have an IP blocker but still no luck. Do I have to own a reader first before beeing allowed to see/purchase e-books?

  • Teddy Budiwan

Hi Henry. I had so much trouble trying to buy ebooks and most of the page I encountered was too difficult for me to understand. Yours is wonderfully written and easily understood. Thank you so much for this information
